The Meaning Behind the Mexican Flag

Image
The Meaning Behind the Mexican Flag   Mexico first adopted its own flag in 1821, the year it became a sovereign nation and secured its   independence from Spain .  However, that design isn’t the original. Instead, the current version was adopted in 1968, though it wasn’t formally declared as the official flag until far later. Additionally, Mexico had many unofficial flags before gaining independence. For example, a Standard of the Virgin of Guadalupe – while never formally adopted as an official flag – is often considered by historians to be the first flag of Mexico. It served as a symbol during the Mexican War, representing the rebel army and the desire for sovereignty. Some imagery from different standards during that period did make its way into the current Mexican flag. There are also symbols based on Aztec lore and representations of various concepts. Here’s a closer look at the Mexican flag, including its development and the meaning behind the current flag of Mexico...

THE FLAG OF MEXICO The flag of Mexico is a very important symbol to all Mexicans, which is exemplified by the yearly celebration of Día de la Bandera, or Flag Day. The Mexican flag is an object of great national pride. Soldiers from the Mexican army ceremoniously raise an enormous flag each and every morning in the central Zócalo square in Mexico City. The flag is so big it takes over a dozen people to carry it to the flagpole each day. The Mexican flag consists of three vertical stripes which are red, white, and green. On the central white stripe lies the national crest: an eagle resting upon a cactus with a serpent in one of its talons. The original Mexican flag was officially presented in 1821 and while the flag has changed moderately over time, the current version is almost exactly the same as the one created almost 200 years ago. Interestingly, while some people think that the Mexican flag is simply the Italian tricolor with the Mexican national crest placed upon it, the ...

Symbols Of Mexico

Image
Symbols Of Mexico The word “Mexico” derives from the Aztecs, also known as Mexicas, who were warrior tribes that came from a place called Aztlán, thought to be in the north-western region of Mexico. They arrived in the Valley of Mexico at the beginning of the 13th century and in 1325 they settled on a small island in the Texcoco Lake. The old word for Mexico, the place where the Mexicas lived, was "metztlixcictlico", and is made up of three sounds in the old Nahuatl language spoken by the Aztecs:  Metztli: which means moon  Xictlii: which means umbilical or centre  Co: means place  Metztlixcictlico, then, means Place in the centre of the moon (or belly button of the moon). The Aztecs called Texcoco Lake the lake of the moon and in the centre was Tenochtitlan, their capital city (now called Mexico City).
